Welcome to The Hurt Volunteer Fire Department Inc. Our department is located in the Town of Hurt in Northern Pittsylvania County. We cover 141 square miles including Hurt, Motley, Grit and Sycamore. We operate seven pieces of apparatus from our station including 3 engines, 2 tankers, a brush truck and a mobile air supply unit. We are members of the Virginia State Firefighters Association & the Pittsylvania County Fire & Rescue Association. Our firefighters are trained through our vigorous, nationally recognized in house training program as well as regional fire schools, state fire school and national fire academy courses. We are very proud of our current level 5 ISO Rating. This rating puts our fire department in a very elite group on a national level. We respond to an average of 200 fire calls per year. We also provide fire prevention programs for children and adults. We have been teaching these programs in the schools, churches and civic organizations since 1992. We also offer a Junior Firefighter Program for our communities young people. Those 16 years of age are eligible for this program providing they meet the academic requirements. We believe this program is very beneficial to the community on many levels. The Hurt Volunteer Fire Department has come a long way since our beginning in 1963 with just a few men and one homemade firetruck. Our dedicated firefighters live by the creed that, true character is measured by the courage to live a life of service, a life others can lean on in their most trying times.
